"Yes, she is." He looked back at his son. "She
wouldn't be a bad choice for a mate when she grows up."
Kai gave his father a startled look. "Father!
She's only two years old!"
The young Hanyou Dog Demon put down the Wolf pup and knelt in
front of her. She gazed back at him with blue eyes. He wondered
why her wolf form had blue eyes. Her father's wolf form had golden
eyes, even though his human form had blue eyes.
"I do wish I had seen you before you were turned back into
a child. I bet you were beautiful."
Kara suddenly jumped up on his chest, licked his face,
making him laugh. Then she was off again. They were close but neither
of them was the one she sought. The younger one stuck in her mind
though. She had the feeling he'll be important to her someday. Kai watched her go and
Sesshomaru smiled at him.
"A smile? This is a rare day! What's the
occasion?" InuYasha asked, as he walked by.
Instead of barbing at the remark, Sesshomaru responded, "I
think my son may have just met his future mate."
"Kara? That would make a good pairing. But
isn't it a bit early yet? At least for Kara?" InuYasha said.
"Yes, but my heart tells me that she is right for my
son." Sesshomaru said pensively, then added, "We'll just have to wait
and see. It's up to them and the fates."
Kara weaved back and forth through the crowd, sniffing
air, ground, and people. It finally came back to her why this scent
had meaning. It was the day her father missed meeting with her after
school. Her mother said Kiba had been there but then he left before
she came home. That was the day Lukana was there too, and that woman,
Lukana's sister. They were the only things different and the strength
of their scents and her father's were the same, like he left when they
passed by the house. Kara pressured her mother for an explanation that
day but could get nothing. The next day she asked her father and his
reaction spoke volumes. He never told her directly but she knew.
Lukana's sister was the one he was waiting for. So why did he run
away?
She stopped. There it was. The wisp of familiar scent that
had led her to the
others was strong in front of her. She followed it straight to Akina.
She barked with joy. She finally found her! Akina and Hiya were sitting on a bench with Lukana in Hiya's lap when the black wolf pup leaped on the bench and pushed
herself between the pair. She placed her front legs and head in Akina's lap.
"Hey you, get down!" Hiya said, not at all happy about
having a furry body in between Akina and herself.
"Hiya, don't. This is Kara. Kara, meet my
friend Hiya and you've already know my sister Lukana," Akina said. Lukana squealed with glee at seeing her "sister" again.
She grabbed at her fur with chubby fists. Kara whimpered at the pain
but all she did was turn and lick Lukana's face. Lukana let go and
laughed as she rubbed her now wet face.
"Kara, isn't someone looking for you?" Hiya inquired,
hoping to get her to leave.
Kara returned her head to Akina's lap and stared up at the
young woman with huge blue eyes. Akina
couldn't help stroking Kara's soft fur.
"KARA!" They heard a calling.
"See! Someone is looking for you. You better
go to him," Akina said. Kara refused to move. She was big enough now to be
quite a burden when she wanted to be.
"KARA!" The man was starting to sound concerned.
"Over here, Kiba!" Hiya called.
Kiba started toward the voice. He hesitated when he
saw whose lap his daughter was lying in, and then who was sitting beside
them. He heaved a sigh, locked away his emotions and approached the
group.
"Kara, didn't you hear me call you? You had us
worried." Kiba said, trying to sound stern.
Kara crawled off the bench and walked slowly over to her
father, her head down in mock contriteness.
"Alright, you're forgiven." Kiba said.
Kara came to life and sprung into her father's arms.
He caught her in well-practiced arms. She covered his face with kisses
making it impossible for him to maintain an aloof mannerism.
Akina was smiling at the pup's antics and her father's
helplessness. She rose and approached them. "I don't believe we've
met."
