On the Celtic Moon Calendar,
There are thirteen moon cycles, each of which is ruled by a tree or plant,
and have a special color and scent associated with it.

The birch tree with its silvery trunk has an affinity with the moon and reflects her light. Make a broom of birch branches and sweep out your house with this broom,
cleansing and purifying your home for the upcoming year.

February is a time of stillness, when the Earth is still asleep and not yet awakened from her wintery sleep. This is a time to sow seeds of knowledge for the coming year --

The Ash Moon is a moon of Water, of feeling and emotion. This the time of creating the magic of union - to discover the transfiguring power of a special union with one person who understands us completely and we, them. A time to find not our "other" half but our extended self.

Color: Deep Blue - Scent: Citrus
The Spring Equinox falls in the Alder Moon time - a perfect balance of day and night. The blossoming of the Earth. A time of Ostara: a celebration of the gifts of the Earth's bounty. Fill your table with eggs painted the color of the rainbow, with flowers of all colors and of breads scenting the whole room with abundance. This is a time to honor the old magic. To weave magic into your work and sow the seeds of tomorrow as you do so.
The Willow Moon

(April-May)
Color: Lavender - Scent: Lavender
The Willow Moon is a time of enchantment. A time to grow a special garden, to enchant our working lives with harmony and peace, to enchant family and friends with love and color. Enchantment is not holding power over someone; rather it is an invitation to that person for greater richness in their life; to experience a bolder tapestry of life.
The Willow tree is sacred to all witches for it is connected to human feeling.
It has immense power and can be used to great effect in White Magic.
The Hawthorn Moon

The Sixth Moon of the Year
(May-June)
Color: Pink - Scent: Mint
The Hawthorn is a protection tree -- a thorny barrier of protection between you and the world. Hawthorn magic should be worked at night and ask that the Hawthorn give your protection for unwelcome attention, unsolicited advances and unwise thoughts.
Work your magic but always with harm to none.
The Oak Moon
The Moon of Strength and Security
The Seventh Moon of the Year
(June-July)
Color: Brick - Scent: Sandalwood
The Oak is a tree of security and foundation. Do magic rituals for financial stability, self-confidence, happiness in love, and a safe place to live under the Oak Moon.
The Oak is used only for positive magic and is the most sacred tree of the Druids.
This is the time to employ nature to its fullest and venerate our life force.
By doing this, we can travel the road of good fortune and sunshine.
The Holly Moon
The Moon of Encirclement and Polarity
The Eighth Moon of the Year
(July-August)
Color: Yellow - Scent: Coriander
The Holly Moon is a time of rejuvenation. A time to work polarity magic.
Polarity is rebalancing, bringing something back to center when it has gone to far in one direction. As with all magic, while some is done with oils, herbs and ritual,
most is done with the mind and intention.
You must believe that you can effect a change.
This is also the time of Lammas -- the harvesting of the first crops.
As the grain is harvested and dies, implicit is the knowledge that it will be reborn -
refreshed and renewed.
The Hazel Moon
The Moon of Wisdom
The Ninth Moon of the Year
(August-September)
Color: Olive Green - Scent: Rosemary & Hyacinth
This moon represents wisdom, forgiveness, travel, and a humanitarian understanding of our fellow creatures - both human and animal.
The Hazel tree is the ancient symbol of the acquisition of knowledge and philosophy.
There are two other trees associated with this moon:
the Mulberry, with the connection to forgiveness and wisdom
and the Olive, with the connection to peace.
Make a staff or walking stick out of Hazel wood. It also is excellent for dowsing sticks.
The Vine Moon
The Moon of Celebration and Harvest
The Tenth Moon of the Year
(September-October)
Color: Burgundy - Scent: Eucalyptus
The Vine is the active symbol of work well rewarded. It symbolizes a wise marriage with nature, diligence regarding our duty, a little luck for above and a well-earned culmination in festivity following work completed.
The passion vice is religious, exotic and resilient. Blueberry and mulberry vinces stand for protection and strength. Grape vines are for prosperity. Hop vines are connected to healing. All vines can be used in binding spells and to bless children before they leave the home.
The Vine Moon is a time of thanksgiving for the harvest.
The Ivy Moon
The Moon of Resilience and Buoyancy
The Eleventh Moon of the Year
(October-November)
Color: Forest Green - Scent: Several (see spell below)
In spells, Ivy is used for tenacity and the ability to cling; is a symbol of good health, and grows to a ripe old age and beautifies during the barren months.
Ivy stands for optimism and the belief that good will ultimately prevail.
It teaches us to be a resilient as the ivy - to dig deep into life and hold on.
The Reed Moon
The Moon of Home and Hearth
The Twelfth Moon of the Year
(November-December)
Color: White - Scent: Basil or Pine
Create an altar in your home - not just for the purpose of making magic -
but to create a microcosm of the blessed realm in your home.
"So it is above, so it is below."
This place should be permanent and used for prayers for blessings
and should include emblems strong enough to pull positive energy into the home.
A beehive is the symbol of a happy, harmonious home life.
A shell symbolizes the hope of dwelling in a romantic, dream home.
A potted herbs shows that love will continue to grow in your home.
The Elder Moon

The Thirteenth Moon of the Year
(December-January)
Color: Gold - Scent: Orange
The Elder tree has long been revered for its medicinal properties. It is a tree of justice.
The Elder Tree and the last moon of the year make their journey together,
ensuring a rebirth of a new year.
Make a wreath of elder branches,
the circle is a symbol of the faith in the eternity of being;
of no ending or beginning - just constant renewal.
