Essential Oils

Essential oils are highly concentrated, volatile oils that can be extracted from aromatic plants. Their use dates back to ancient times, and their wide variety of therapeutic, medicinal and culinary uses has ensured their continued popularity. Essential oils can enhance the quality of mind, body and spirit because they are the pure essence of the plant with no artificial additives. Ancient Romans and Egyptians used essential oils to enhance their moods, prayers and homes. Pure essential oils have a place in everyone's home and life.

Remember that all essential oils should never be applied directly to the skin without testing a small area first. If you have a reaction to the pure essential oil, then dilute the oil with Jojoba or Almond oil, or you can put a drop of oil on your hair and/or clothes instead.

Essential Oil Recipes

A Wake Up Bath

To a warm bath, put in 3 drops of rosemary oil, 2 drops of lemon juice, and 2 drops of eucalyptus. You can also add this mixture to 1 ounce of unscented shampoo (excellent for shower takers). After your bath or shampoo, you will feel refreshed and ready to go.

Carpet and Air Freshener

Use a box of Borax as your starting point. You find it in the detergent aisle of your grocery store. For each 2 cups of Borax, add 25 drops of essential oil. You can use any scent but these are recommended: Cinnamon, Lavender, Rosewood or Sweet Orange. Mix the drops well into the Borax. Sprinkle it on your carpet with a large spoon or a can with a shaker lid (an old baby powder bottle works great). If you have indoor pets, the Sweet Orange works the best.

To make an air freshener, add 25 drops of essential oil (same as above) to a 16-ounce bottle of water with a sprayer attached. Lightly spray your furniture, drapes, and carpets (be careful of getting it on wood floors as it might discolor the wood). Shake the bottle after every few sprays to make sure the oil is well mixed.

Keeping the Mosquitoes Away
(can be used on people and pets)

Mix together in a spray bottle: 8 ounces of Aloe Vera, 10 drops of Rose Geranium, 10 drops of Lemongrass, 10 drops of Myrrh, and 20 drops of Citronella.

Do not spray near the face. This is very important for your pets as mosquitoes can carry heartworm disease.

Essential Oil Recipes for Pets

Flea Repellent

Sew together a tube of cotton material large enough to fit around your pets neck (an old sock works well) fill it with Pennyroyal add a snap or piece of Velcro to close it. Place it around the neck before your pet goes outside for a natural flea repellent. Its effectiveness will last for about 4 months if left in the open or about 6 months I'd put away in a Ziploc bag. This should not be used by itself if you live in an area where there a lot of fleas. In that case use it with your regular flea repellent.

Anxiety Spray

Use bottled water to both clean out a spray bottle and to use for the spray mixture. In 4 oz. water, add 50 drops of lavender, 50 drops of chamomile, and 20 drops of orange. Spray lightly on pet 10 times so that they can smell the aroma.

Calming Oil for Hyperactive Dogs

Soothing Aching Joints

In one-third ounce base oil of olive oil or jojoba oil, add 12 drops of birch, 8 drops of juniper and 7 drops of rosemary. Massage into joint area.

Increasing your Pet's Energy

Salt Glow --  an exfoliating massage and bath.

Combine 2 cups of sea salt with 1 ounce of almond oil and 6-8 drops of your favorite essential oil into a bowl. Be sure to test a small area of your skin to make sure you are not allergic. Never test pure essential oils on your skin - always dilute it in a base oil first (almond, jojoba or olive oil). Mix the ingredients together well, crushing any clumps well. Stand nude in a dry bathtub and massage your body in a circular motion with the salt mixture, starting at the feet and working your way up. DO NOT MASSAGE YOUR NECK AND FACE. After you've massaged your body, fill the tub with warm water and soak your cares away. The water will dissolve the salt and your skin will be soft, stimulated and sweetly scented.
